Australia's Backyard Paradise
The South Pacific is the natural choice for Australian first-time cruisers. Departure ports in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne mean no international flights are required, and itineraries of 7–14 nights hit the sweet spot for those taking their first longer voyage. The region is also excellent value compared to European or Alaskan alternatives once you factor in flight costs.
The islands themselves offer stunning natural beauty — powder-white beaches, turquoise lagoons, dense jungle, and some of the most vibrant coral reef systems in the Pacific. The cultures are deeply welcoming; Melanesian and Polynesian hospitality is legendary.
Main South Pacific Cruise Destinations
Fiji
333 islands of tropical perfection. Lautoka and Suva are the main cruise ports. Expect warm welcomes, kava ceremonies, spectacular diving and snorkelling at the Mamanuca Islands.
Vanuatu
80+ islands with extraordinary diversity — active volcanoes, WWII wrecks, blue holes and bungee jumping. Port Vila and Luganville are the main cruise stops. Wonderfully unspoiled.
New Caledonia
French Polynesia meets Pacific paradise. Nouméa has excellent French cuisine and a chic café culture set against stunning lagoon scenery. A UNESCO World Heritage lagoon — the world's largest.
Samoa
Two nations — Samoa and American Samoa — offering some of the most authentic Pacific culture remaining. Apia is a charming capital with fascinating colonial history and beautiful To Sua Ocean Trench.

Best Time to Cruise the South Pacific
✅ Best Season: May – October (Australian Winter)
Dry season across most of the South Pacific. Lower humidity, clear skies, and calmer seas. School holiday periods (July) are the busiest and priciest. Book early for July departures.
⚠️ Wet Season: November – April
The Pacific wet season brings higher humidity, afternoon rain showers and occasional tropical cyclones. Many cruises still operate successfully, but conditions are more variable. Insurance with cyclone cover is strongly recommended.
South Pacific Cruise Tips
Currency: Most islands accept Australian dollars at tourist areas. Fijian Dollar (FJD), Vanuatu Vatu (VUV) and Pacific Franc (XPF in New Caledonia) are the local currencies. ATMs are available in major ports but bring some local cash for markets and smaller vendors.
Shore excursions: The South Pacific is one of the best regions for booking independent tours. Local operators offer village visits, snorkelling trips and island tours at a fraction of cruise line prices. Your ship will always have a list of trusted operators.
Reef-safe sunscreen: Many Pacific island nations are taking steps to protect their coral reefs. Check local guidelines before packing sunscreen and opt for mineral-based, reef-safe formulas where possible.
Visa requirements: Australian passport holders can visit most South Pacific islands visa-free for cruise calls. Always verify the current entry requirements for each port on your specific itinerary before departure.
What to pack: Light, breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, a waterproof phone pouch, and a dry bag for water activities. Don't forget a light jacket for cooler evenings at sea.
