Why Cruise the Mediterranean?
The Mediterranean offers one of the most culturally rich cruise experiences on the planet. Each port brings a completely different flavour — the bustling souks of Morocco, the cliff-top villages of the Cinque Terre, the whitewashed windmills of Mykonos. No other cruise region packs so much variety into one itinerary.
For Australians and Americans, the Mediterranean is a fly-cruise destination, typically anchored around flights into Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Athens (Piraeus) or Venice. Budget for your flights separately and consider spending a few days pre or post cruise to maximise your long-haul travel investment.
Eastern, Western & Italian Med
Eastern Mediterranean
Greece, Turkey and Croatia dominate. Departs Athens or Venice. History lovers' paradise — ancient ruins at every port.
Western Mediterranean
Spain, France and Morocco. Departs Barcelona or Rome. Tapas, Gaudí, French Riviera and North African souks.
Italian-Focused Routes
Round-Italy or Italy-focused itineraries. Rome, Venice, Amalfi Coast, Sicily and Cinque Terre.

Best Time for a Mediterranean Cruise
✅ Sweet Spot: April–May & September–October
Shoulder season is the Mediterranean at its best — warm and sunny without peak crowds and prices. Santorini and Dubrovnik become genuinely overwhelming in peak summer. April and October offer a dramatically better experience at lower prices.
⚠️ Peak Summer: July – August
Hot (35°C+), extremely crowded at iconic sites, and the most expensive time to sail. If you must travel in summer, book shore excursions that start early morning.
❄️ Winter: November – March
Very limited cruise itineraries. Cold and wet in many ports. Not recommended for a Mediterranean cruise — repositioning cruises pass through but don't focus on Med ports.
Mediterranean Cruise Tips
Book major attractions in advance: The Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Acropolis, Sagrada Família and other iconic sites have timed entry. Book online months ahead — your half-day port call doesn't allow for a 2-hour queue.
Tender ports: Smaller ports like Santorini use tender boats. Embark early to beat queues, or wait until mid-morning when the rush subsides.
Currency: Most Mediterranean countries use the Euro. Turkey uses Lira. Croatia adopted the Euro in 2023. Have small amounts of local cash for markets.
Getting there from Australia: Budget $1,800–$3,500 AUD per person return for flights to Barcelona or Rome. Consider a pre or post-cruise stay — flying 20+ hours for a 7-night cruise without exploring the destination is a common regret.
