Cruise Tips & Tricks

Accumulated wisdom from seasoned cruisers — upgrade strategies, money-saving hacks, sea day ideas, and the things cruise lines don't advertise.

💰 Money-Saving Booking Tips

📅
Timing

Book Early or Book Last Minute — Avoid the Middle

The best prices are found 12–18 months out (best cabin selection) or within 60 days of sailing (remaining inventory). Mid-range booking windows often have the least value. Repositioning cruises are always exceptional value.

🎁
Perks

Negotiate or Ask for Perks — They Often Say Yes

Cruise lines regularly offer "free at sea" perks: drinks packages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining credits, or onboard credit. These aren't always advertised. Call the cruise line directly and ask what extras they can add to match or beat an online quote.

🔄
Loyalty

Join the Loyalty Program Immediately

Every major cruise line has a free loyalty program. Even your first cruise earns points toward future discounts, priority boarding, free laundry, and cabin upgrades. Register before you board — don't wait until you're onboard.

👥
Groups

Group Bookings Unlock Free Berths

Most cruise lines offer a free cabin for every 8–16 paying cabins in a group booking. If you can organise a group of friends or family, one person effectively cruises free — or everyone shares the discount.

🚢 Onboard Tips That Actually Matter

🍽️
Dining

Book Specialty Restaurants for the First Night

Everyone eats in the main dining room on night one, creating long waits. Specialty restaurants are often quiet and sometimes offer first-night discounts. Book online before boarding for best availability.

Drinks

The Drinks Package Maths

A drinks package is worth it if you drink 4–6 drinks per day (including speciality coffees, bottled water, fresh juices, and mocktails — not just alcohol). Do the daily maths with your actual drinking habits before buying. Pre-purchasing is usually 10–20% cheaper than buying onboard.

📶
Tech

Download Everything Before You Board

Ship Wi-Fi is expensive and slow. Before boarding: download offline Google Maps for each port, download podcasts and audiobooks, download movies to your tablet, and charge all devices. Only buy a Wi-Fi package if you genuinely need it for work.

💳
Money

Pre-Pay Gratuities at the Current Rate

Cruise lines periodically increase gratuity rates. Pre-paying at time of booking locks in today's rate and removes a recurring daily charge from your onboard account — reducing sticker shock at the end of the voyage.

🏊
Sea Days

Claim Your Pool Chair Before 7am on Sea Days

Pool deck chairs on sea days are gone by 8am on most ships. The trick: go early, leave a towel and a book, then have breakfast. Alternatively, find the quieter adults-only pool areas that most passengers don't know about.

🍹 Are Drinks Packages Worth It?

This is the most-asked question by new cruisers. The honest answer: it depends entirely on your drinking habits. Here's how to do the maths.

✅ Worth Buying If You...

  • Drink 4–6+ drinks daily (incl. coffees, juices)
  • Love premium cocktails and wines
  • Hate tracking spending on holiday
  • Have a long sea-day-heavy itinerary
  • Are pre-purchasing (10–20% cheaper)

❌ Skip It If You...

  • Drink 1–2 drinks per day or less
  • Mostly drink water, beer, and house wine
  • Have port-heavy itineraries (drink ashore)
  • Already have an all-inclusive fare
  • Are happy with the complimentary options

Note: Most cruise lines require both guests in a cabin to purchase the drinks package if one does (to prevent sharing). Factor this into your maths.

⚓ Port Day Tips

🗺️
Excursions

3rd-Party Tours Save 30–60% vs Ship Excursions

For ports you're comfortable navigating, reputable 3rd-party tour operators charge significantly less than the cruise line. The trade-off: the ship won't wait if your independent tour runs late. Never book a non-ship excursion without a buffer of 2+ hours before all-aboard time.

🏃
Strategy

Be First Off the Ship in Popular Ports

At tender ports and popular stops like Dubrovnik or Santorini, getting off early means smaller crowds at major sites. Eat breakfast before the crowds wake, be at the gangway early, and return for lunch on the ship when everyone else is queuing to disembark.

💵
Money

Local Currency Beats Ship-Offered Currency Exchange

Currency exchange rates onboard ships are poor. Use an ATM in port (notify your bank before travel), or bring a no-foreign-transaction-fee travel card. Never exchange currency at port tourist traps near the ship terminal.

⬆️ Upgrade Hacks

🎰
Upgrades

Bid on Upgrades via the Cruise Line's Own Program

Most major cruise lines now run upgrade bidding programs (Royal Up, Celebrity MoveUp, etc). You submit a bid above the minimum and receive an upgrade if space is available, often at 30–50% below the retail price difference. It's speculative but worth trying on any 7+ night sailing.

🤝
Relationship

Be Kind to the Check-In Staff

Cabin upgrades at embarkation do happen — especially when a category is oversold. Being pleasant, patient and mentioning it's a special occasion (anniversary, honeymoon, birthday) to check-in staff costs nothing and occasionally yields results. Never demand; always ask nicely.
