Overview
Why Cruise Australia & New Zealand?
The Australia–New Zealand cruise route is a true gem of the Southern Hemisphere. Connecting two of the world's most beautiful countries, this itinerary offers extraordinary diversity — from Australia's vibrant harbour cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) to New Zealand's dramatic fiords, rolling vineyards, and rich Māori culture.
For Australians, this is the most accessible international cruise — departures from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane mean no flights required. For Americans and other international travellers, combining a cruise with a pre or post-cruise land tour of Australia or New Zealand makes excellent use of the long-haul flight investment. The scenery throughout New Zealand's South Island, in particular, rivals Alaska and Norway for dramatic natural beauty.

Scenic Cruising: Milford, Doubtful & Dusky Sounds
The crown jewel of any New Zealand cruise is the scenic day through Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ships spend a full day cruising through Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Dusky Sound — three dramatically beautiful fiords carved by ancient glaciers.
🏔️ Milford Sound
The most famous and accessible fiord. Look for Stirling Falls (155m high), Bowen Falls, and wildlife including fur seals, dolphins, and occasional penguins. The ship will turn 360° inside the sound — get on deck early for the best viewing positions.
💡 Pro Tip: Book a Port Side Balcony
For the Fiordland scenic cruising day, a balcony cabin on the port (left) side of the ship offers the best glacier and mountain views as you travel north through the sounds. If sailing south, choose starboard.
When to Go
Best Time for an AUS/NZ Cruise
✅ Best Season: December – March (Summer)
Warmest temperatures and best weather for scenic cruising. Milford Sound is at its most spectacular with waterfalls flowing strongly. This is peak cruise season — book 12+ months ahead for the best cabin selection.
💰 Value Season: October – November & March – April
Shoulder months offer lower prices and fewer crowds. Late spring (Oct–Nov) has longer daylight hours and fewer tourists. Early autumn (Mar–Apr) still has pleasant weather and excellent wine harvest season in Marlborough and Hawke's Bay.
⚠️ Avoid: May – September (Winter)
Limited cruise itineraries during the Southern Hemisphere winter. Some cruise lines reposition away from the region. Weather in the South Island can be very cold, with snow possible in Fiordland.
Insider Tips
Australia & New Zealand Cruise Tips
🍷
World-Class Wine Regions
New Zealand's Marlborough region (reached via Picton) and Hawke's Bay (Napier) produce some of the world's best Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Book a wine tour directly with local operators — they're significantly cheaper than ship excursions.
🐧
Unique Wildlife
Dunedin's Otago Peninsula is home to the world's only mainland Royal Albatross colony, plus yellow-eyed penguins and fur seals. Book an independent wildlife tour — the ship will not wait for late returns, so give yourself a generous buffer.
💰
Currency & Tipping
Australia uses AUD, New Zealand uses NZD (they are not interchangeable — exchange rates differ). Tipping is not expected in either country — service charges are included. No need to tip extra unless service is exceptional.
🧥
Packing for Unpredictable Weather
New Zealand's weather, especially in the South Island, can change rapidly. Pack layers: t-shirts, mid-layer fleece, and a waterproof/windproof jacket — even in summer. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for port days.
